I have started a new business which requires me to carry a laptop that can quickly and easily connect to any available wifi network. My foray out today almost led me to run the car over this laptop many times with my car...

I know linux is more secure, but there's got to be an easier way to view "the available wifi networks" than this? The gal/guy behind the counter at Carls/Culvers/McDonalds doesn't know what his restaurants' domain name is, much less what his DNS servers are...

or like usual... am i overlooking something?

Spence,
Could you elaborate on that, please?  Checking for available wifi is simply a matter of clicking on the network icon in your panel.  Does that not work for you?

As mac suggests it *should* be as simple as it is in Windows, simply clicking the networkmanager tray icon should show available networks.

Is it not  ??

What happens if you right-click on the network icon?

What happens if you right-click on the network icon?

I get a little pop up with
Code: [Select]
enable networking
enable wifi
connection information (which was greyed out)
and edit connections

both the enables have check marks in front of them, I tried selecting the wifi, turning it off and on several times, but it only ever showed me my home wifi network... also restarted laptop a few times and used teh f12 key to  toggle wifi on and off...

while selecting edit connections brings up another pop up which allows me to add edit or delete my ethernet or home wifi network, doesn't show others...

Have you tried reinstalling network-manager:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager network-manager-gnome network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome
then rebooting ?

if that makes no difference, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [n]m-applet

If you right click the icon and choose "Edit connections" does it show anything?  And, BTW, are you in range of any wifi now?
