Screen not detected
« on: April 27, 2015, 05:10:17 am »
Hello!

Today I've plugged a screen to my computer running with Peppermint.  But ... nothing happens. The screen does not detect the computer and the computer does not detect the screen.
Do you know how to fix that ?

Thank in advance for your help.

HI Antoine33

Welcome to the forums

A little MORE information might be helpful

is this another monitor your connecting to the PC and if so do you have another monitor that works ?

During boot do you see the bios information on the screen ?

Hi,
That's true, I am not very precise! Sorry.

The computer is a notebook. I connected a screen to the VGA port. The monitor of the notebook work but nothing on the screen, even during the boot.

OK

It's likely you may have to turn on external video/monitor in the bios, the way to access the bios settings differs from machine to machine but I'm guessing that's where the answer lies.

Do you know how to access the BIOS ? if not you might find that information online or post the make/model of your netbook and maybe someone here will know or find out for you

Good luck

I've enter the BIOS pushing F2.
Unfortunately there is nothing inside regarding external/internal monitor. :(
My notebook is EEEPC made by ASUS.

ok

try booting up the netbook with the external monitor connected then press Fn+F8.

post back with the result

This may require installing xrandr but I'm hoping it's not neccessary

OK

It may already be installed if not I can help you install it but I've never used it so I'm not sure I can offer much with that, but hopefully someone else here can

To install it run this command in the terminal

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install x11-xserver-utils

if you already have it installed it will tell you that you already have the latest version

Let us know how you get on

Good luck

Hi Antoine33,

I am sorry to inform you that you seem to be using an old version of Peppermint. You need to update to Peppermint 5. This requires a complete new installation as there is no safe way to get the new version any other way. If you prefer to continue with your older version, maybe someone here can give you a solution, but my advice is to update to the new version. If you wait until about June 01, 2015 the Peppermint 6 version will become available.

Regards,

No as that mentions "precise" it must be Peppermint 3 which (as it's based on an LTS) is still supported upstream.

Also x11-xserver-utils (which includes xrandr) should already be installed .. it's arandr that is probably the best bet here

Firstly, lets fix the package lists otherwise you'll not be able to install anything .. open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /var/lib/apt/lists /var/lib/apt/lists-broken
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mkdir -pv /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then if that last command worked without error
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install arandr
ten let us know if that all went well, and we'll explain what to do with ARandR

With the second monitor attached and switched on....

Fire up ARandR .. drag the 2 squares that represent your monitors to where you want them (side by side ?)

Then you'll  need to go to Outputs > VGA > Active to set the second monitor as active.

then go to Layout > Apply to apply your settings .. the second monitor should now spring to life.

It is very strange...
With ARandR I have only one grey square called "default".
Nevertheless when I plug the screen to the computer, the screen turns on automaticly but then says that he can't detect the computer...
