The Linux Gods Have Cracked The Whip
« on: April 23, 2015, 06:24:09 am »
It is a glorious day in the computer world.  A couple weeks ago wife burned up yet another computer.  Through a series of events her computer crashed last night.  Yes, it was the big one.  Did she make a set of restore disks like I instructed?  No.  Did she have an OS disk?  No.  Long story short, she no longer has Windows on her computer but is sporting a brand spanking new sparkling rendition of P5!  It gets better.  Now that she no longer has Windows this means that I no longer need to infest my computer with Windows.  Years of toil have finally come to fruition.  We are Windows free!
Peppermint is funner than a 3-legged dog on a squirrel hunt.

Wish I could say the same but Jayne refuses to try anything different .. though oddly recently she's taken to 'promoting' Peppermint to her friends as an alternative to failed Windows installs, even though she doesn't use it herself (the kids do, but Jayne's stubbornly clinging to Win7)

Recently 2 of her friends (Vista) PC's that went belly up have been moved to Peppermint and they're absolutely loving it, so hope springs eternal .. maybe when she's the "odd one out" :)
(I guess that means I now only have to convert half of facebook and we're away)

The main reason Windows is on the vast majority of machines in the 1st world, is because MS have cunningly arranged for it come pre-installed on the majority of new machines.  If people had to shop around and choose which OS to install, the percentages would look very different  ;D.

Yup, getting rid of Windows is a lot like lancing a boil. There's the fear of doing it.  However, when it's done, everything feels a whole lot better ;D!!

I just checked the charts again last time i checked was when windows xp was shut down....
what is amazing to me is windows has 91% of the market share now, but how those percentages radically changed....
17% still run XP, which is scary...  windows 8.1 has only 10.5% windows 8 has 3.5 % Vista has 1.97% and the rest goes to windows 7 with 58.4%
which totals up to 91% the rest belongs to mac osx 10.10 3.96% osx 10.9  1.6% and what is classified as other with 3.4%

Agreed!  If people could only do that --choose their own OS in the same way as the Europeans can now choose their own browsers.  How I wish!  ;)

What really bothers me is that, at least here in Europe, you hear very little any more about Microsoft's monopoly of the PC OS market!! Instead, Google with its Android OS has now become the target of the regulators in Europe -- as if the Microsoft problem has been solved! My guess is that the "solution" of the "Microsoft problem" involves heavy lobbying of the politicians by Microsoft ...  ;)

That sounds like what happened it me the other way. You guys might get a kick of this. I had been running P5 on an external drive. So the other day I was trying to adjust my speaker's positions. But I guess it must have caught the USB cable to the external drive or something because Peppermint completely froze up. So I tried rebooting, after making sure the cable was securely attached and all. A few attempts like that were unsuccessful. I tried fsck by booting into a root shell. It did come up, but in a few minutes the icons turned to boxes no programs or files worked. Even CTRL/ALT/Delete failed.  My guess was that it couldn't read the file system. It did reboot a few times, with the same result. So I tried again booting the shell, but I couldn't even get that to come up.

So it became evident file system was corrupted beyond repair so I tried to reinstall.  I must not have been paying attention or something because I managed to erase the internal drive, which had Windows. So I used Supergrub to detect any OS, and Windows was indeed gone. That left the best option being to install P5 internally, so I'm now Windows free.   ;) :D  Oh I forgot to mention before obliterating Windows by accident, I had this notion of just using it for a while. Within 30 seconds the abomination annoyed so badly that the idea went right out the window.
