Black screen after booting [SOLVED]
« on: April 19, 2015, 10:27:18 am »
Hi! I've installed PM5. Everything seems OK but after the "starting up" screen, it seems to load but nothing happens in the screen. The monitor works just fine (in fact, i'm writing from the same computer running the live version). If I press the shutdown button, the screen shows the messages that are normally showed and then it shuts down. Any help?

Hello eltrenveloz.

Welcome to Peppermint 5, and welcome to Peppermint forum!

Are you saying you only get a black screen with no default wallpaper and no menu panel?  Or do you get a menu panel like you see in the live version but with a black screen and without Peppermint 5 live version's smoky wallpaper?

Hi eltrenveloz,

So tell us some things: such as, what kind of computer is this (Desktop PC, Notebook???), what brand is it? In short: anything and everything that you can give us can only help us help you. ;)

After I did this: http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,968.msg8333.html#msg8333 I can log in, and then I see the default wallpaper with no panel.

It's a desktop computer. It hasn't got anythithing special: the graphic card is on board and it works fine with Lubuntu. I've installed PM3 before and it worked just fine.

Well eltrenveloz, your answer surprised me.  :o

I expected to hear exactly the opposite of what you just told us here.

Is this, by any chance an old XP computer?

Soon, somebody more knowledgeable than me will help you here!!  ;)

Yes, long time ago it had Windows XP, but for years it's been working with Ubuntu or Peppermint.

Do you know how to try booting with the
i915.modeset=0
kernel boot parameter ?

No, I don't know how to do that.

I've entered as a guest and everything is working OK. Maybe it's a problem with my user...? Anything else I can tell for you to help me?

Have you tried simply reinstalling ? .. or creating a new user account from the command line ?

if it's working from the guest account it's not kernel mode setting that's the problem (so those boot parameters won't help), it's definitely something in your account's home directory that's the issue.

Hold on ....

Sorry I missed your earlier post that said you can now log on, but have no panel

From the desktop are you able to open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T ?

Is this purely a screen size thing .. eg. does the menu pop up if you ht Ctrl+Esc ?

If you're able to open a terminal, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [l]xpaneland what happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
lxpanel -p Peppermnt
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

Nothing happens when I log in my account and try Ctrl+Alt+T or Ctrl+Esc.

I've tried reinstalling... like 5 times... I didn't try creating a new user account.

I think it's something in my account's home directory, which is set in another partition of the disk... the message "scanning btrfs filesystems" has anything to do with it?

So you're using the home partition from another distro ?

Hi eltrenveloz, I just had a thought while eating breakfast  :P.  You say you have 3 partitions; /, /home and /swap.  Have you formatted your home partition?  Or, have you left it with data from a previous Peppermint/Linux installation?
