SSB to the old forums.
« on: April 15, 2014, 08:14:20 am »
I just had an idea while I was editing my menu, just adding a few favourites like GIMP and Terminator.  Its great that there is a link here to the old forums.  I think it would also be really useful to have an SSB link to the old forums included in PM5.  This would be especially useful for new users, considering the bulk of the generic PM solutions, tips and tricks are still located here.  Give it different coloured logo, so that it stands apart from the new forums.  Its going to be active for the foreseeable future so expose it as much as possible. Just a thought   :).

It's an idea, but I'm wondering if that is more likely to just confuse new users.

Eventually I plan on writing more up to date versions of all the tutorials/etc. on this forum, but decided I'd wait till after Peppermint 5 and base them primarily on that.
(kinda pointless writing tutorials that aren't tested as working in the new version)

Consider video tutuorials since we now have that capability (simply) on the forum.
What do you think?

OK, let me rephrase .. NO.
(at least not by me)

Video's aren't my thing .. but there'll be nothing stopping YOU doing a video to go with the written instructions if you wish ;)

I've been told that I have a face made for radio and a voice made for braille.  You want neither representing Peppermint, I assure you.  And besides, I have no video camera.

As I mentioned before some of the video minded guys and / or gals on the forum could maybe do something like that.  They could be an officially designated team to whom others might submit written tutorials to be done (re-done) in video.  Just a thought.  Many are like me in the sense that they learn better when they see what they're learning.

Speaking of such, I saw a video just this morning that helped me a great deal in understanding the Walkman.   :)

I've no problem with other doing video tutorials, or even doing screencasts of them following anything I post (I'll be open to adding them to the tutorials).. but I'm unlikely to do it myself, as that would entail learning how (and no doubt a lot of time editing, etc.), and I have no interest in doing so ...

Lazy by nature you see ;)

I wouldn't mind having a go at the simpler ones with some guidance, I enjoy experimenting with vokoscreen & openshot,

probably something like screencasts with written subtitle because I also have a face best suited for radio and a voice like a coo farting up a close
If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

Vokoscreen should work well for that.

I played around with vokoscreen a bit tonight and that just might be the ticket.   Thanks for mentioning it.   ;)

To address the original question, I will not be including an SSB pointing to the old forum as I believe it'll introduce an unnecessary element of confusion. There's a big link to the old forum from the new forum index. That should suffice.

Also, I'll look into doing some video tutorials at some point as I have experience with screen captures, tons of high end camera equipment, and a fairly articulate voice. It'll be something to look into after the initial wave of Peppermint Five excitement settles down.
