(SOLVED) wired connection strength

hello i have been having trouble with the wifi strength on my acer aspire 5536 laptop with peppermint 5 installed,i got my son-law to give me a Ethernet cable but it does not show the signal strength in %
does anyone know of a sudo command i can use to check please before i re-install peppermint 5?

Hi penrose1950,

To get a simple output updated every second enter this in your console/terminal window (sudo is not required):

watch -n1 iwconfig

The entry for Link Quality is not exactly signal strength but still is a good indicator of  what it's named: the quality of your link to the router. The % of the link "strength", as I understand it, is easy to calculate: divide the first number by the second, then multiply the answer by 100. For example: if you see

Link Quality=55/70

then your signal strength is (55 divided by 70) X 100 or 78.6%
