[Solved] How to access Plasma desktop on P5
« on: March 17, 2015, 01:03:22 am »
I recently switched back to Peppermint after going the rounds with Mint.  I installed the Plasma desktop using the software manager.  In Mint when you log out the login window gives you an option of switching your desktops.  I couldn't find this option on P5.  How do I switch to the Plasma desktop?

Hi CegulsNest, welcome to the Peppermint Forum.  In the login screen, look to the top right hand side of your screen.  You will see a set of icons.  Click on the one with wrench/spanner.  You will be able to switch to whatever desktop environment you have installed from there  ;).

I think you are unique within our community by using the KDE Plasma desktop.  Usually when people change their DE here.  It's to the even lighter end of the desktop spectrum  :).  I hope this helps - good luck and have fun   ;D!!

Thank you for your reply.  I left Windows a couple years ago.  I started my Linux experience with Peppermint, switched to Mint for awhile and am now back with Peppermint.  Sadly, I've forgotten some of the things I'd learned about Peppermint.  I switched to the Plasma DE because even though I disliked Win Vista I loved their look...the sharp clean lines and such.  I wanted to get the same visual experience with Linux.

TBH, I came up through all the Windows versions since the first Windows and gave it up with Vista.  In fact, I used a program which was out before Windows called WinDOS.  (Showing my age).  I started programming in 1973.  Since getting involved with Linux a couple years back I came to thoroughly love Linux and make strong attempts to get WinUsers to migrate over.  I don't know very much about Linux, but even at the age of 59 I am strong willed to learn all I can.

I know I'm still a noob, but I'm reading as much as I can find about how the system operates and how to get things done.  I'm a stickler for GUIs, but I'm learning to use the terminal for many things.  All in all...Linux is very cool.

That worked.  When I first looked at those icons I thought that was an SD card.  LOL.  I've got a couple questions though...where did all my desktop icons go?  Can I reclaim those or do I have to make them all again?

On another note...I've noticed many times that people talk about "desktops" when they refer to "workspaces".  It's confusing.  I only have need of one workspace.  I have tried setting the number to 1 but I keep getting 2 workspaces.  Can I set that so that I only have 1 workspace?

Yeahhhh...found my icons.  I switched to the folder view layout and there they were.  Ok...I'm going away now.  At least till tomorrow.

Well...that was a wash.  After playing around with the Plasma DE for awhile I decided it wasn't for me right now.  It was much too cumbersome for me being such a noob.  Can you suggest how I might more closely mimic the Windows Vista visual appearance?  I've switched back to the Peppermint DE and am currently using the Clearlooks theme but it just isn't quite what I'm looking for.

Hi CegulsNest, I would start here: gnome-look.org.  It is important to remember that Peppermint only supports GTK 2.x Themes.  Good luck and happy hunting  ;)!

Thanks...I've been there and I'm sure I will be again.  I'll remember the "2".  I found a Vista theme I've had laying around collecting dust and am trying that out.  I pretty much like that one.

Yeah...it's all very cool.  I had to pull out of Mint.  17 was getting so bloated it didn't want to play nice on my old Acer with 1 gig of RAM.  I had to retire about a year and a half back and I've got plenty of time to learn new stuff.  I picked up some programming stuff on GTK and TCL.  That looks pretty interesting.

Apparently I knackered this.  I copied all the files over...selected the Peppermint-Vista settings for themes and icons and such but not getting the theme to show.  I'm still showing the Clearlooks theme.  Does this require a particular desktop environment?  I switched back to the default.

(Added)...
I figured it out.  I'm such a goob.

Hi CegulsNest,  To change the number of workspaces, you need to navigate to the Peppermint Control Center.  If you are still using Peppermint's default desktop, LXDE.  It is located by navigating to menu > Preferences > Peppermint Control Center.  In the Window Manager tab, select the number of Workspaces.  I'm able to select 1 space without an issue.  I hope this helps  ;).

Thanks...I've been there and I'm sure I will be again.  I'll remember the "2".  I found a Vista theme I've had laying around collecting dust and am trying that out.  I pretty much like that one.

Did I mention I feel like a kid with a new toy?

Sometimes GTK 3 themes also have GTK 2 theme so applications maintain a consistent look. So if you venture into the GTK 3  section just read to see if that's included. Another place you can go for themes is is Noobslab . You'll be all as it's a GTK theme. It tells you parenthesis what type of theme it is.

Yeah, I have 3 gigs ram and my system bogs down on it. I also won't recommend Gnome-Shell or Cinnamon for 1 gig of ram for the same reason.
