Can i reboot an earlier kernel by swapping "vimlinuz.old" with "vmlinuz"?

No need to do anythng as risky as renaming files .. the old kernels are stiil present and selectable from the GRUB menu.

Turn off your PC

Turn on your PC and immediately hit and hold the Shift key .. eventaully you'll be presented with the GRUB menu which looks something like (but not exactly) this:-

Use the up/down arrow keys to select thee one you want to boot (Peppermint with Linux 3.2.0-40-generic) and hit enter to boot into that kernel.

Be aware ..
a) depending on the GRUB version that kernel may be listed under the "Previous Linux Versions" submenu
and
b) do NOT select the 3.2.0-40 kernel line that ends with "(recovery mode)"

Once you managed to boot into the 3.2.0-40 kernel (whilst running that kernel) come back here and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
so we can check you are indeed booted into the older kernel.

Very cool! I'll get right onto this and we'll see what we see :-)

 dpkg -l | grep 3.2.0-65

Linux kernel image for version 3.2.0 on 32 bit x86 SMP

jair-rohm@jairrohm-AO756 ~ $ ls /lib/modules
3.2.0-23-generic  3.2.0-40-generic  3.2.0-77-generic
3.2.0-39-generic  3.2.0-65-generic

jair-rohm@jairrohm-AO756 ~ $ dpkg -l | grep firmware
ii  linux-firmware                         1.79.18
  Firmware for Linux kernel drivers

jair-rohm@jairrohm-AO756 ~ $ dmesg | grep ath
[   26.166978] ath9k: Unknown parameter `pio'

Ah, I think I spot the problem
Quote
jair-rohm@jairrohm-AO756 ~ $ ls /lib/modules
3.2.0-23-generic  3.2.0-40-generic  3.2.0-77-generic
3.2.0-39-generic  3.2.0-65-generic

looks like a more recent kernel got kinda half installed

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
apt-cache search 3.2.0-77
and do you get any errors at the end of
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update

Hi trkkazulu, I see that the outputs you returned are very long.  In future, could you please encapsulate long outputs with the Sp Spoiler function.  This is located in the forum editor, just above the crying  :'( emoticon.  It makes it much easier for people to read and keeps things neat and tidy.  This time I've done this for you.  Thanks in advance ;).

OK, now run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image-3.2.0-77-generic linux-headers-3.2.0-77-generic linux-tools-3.2.0-77 linux-firmware
If those run without error, REBOOT (normally .. ie. without going to the GRUB menu)

Once rebooted, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep ath

I'm back and i'm seeing this:

The output from "lsmod | grep ath" is:

ath9k_common           13781  0
ath9k_hw              391626  1 ath9k_common
ath                    19387  2 ath9k_common,ath9k_hw

bluetooth             158447  24 rfcomm,bnep,ath3k,btusb

Thanks a bunch for all of your help with this :-)

Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and what happens now if you run:
