could not connect to wifi after computer swap (SOLVED)
« on: March 02, 2015, 06:42:41 am »
Hello

I don't really know much about linux so bear with me please, i'll try my best. I had this netbook (samsung n150) and was running Peppermint on it with no problems for the past year but then the netbook broke (in half). So I've purchased another one (same model) and installed the old hdd (which was intact) into the new one. Now everything seems to be working except for wifi. I can see all the networks around including mine but it just doesn't accept the auth password and keeps asking me for one even though I enter the correct one. I tried to boot with a live cd to test wifi and it works just fine, but I don't want to reinstall it, it's the only reason why I bought another one of the same model.

I don't know how to fix this, I tried searching old threads and tried a couple of things but with no luck. I will be grateful if anyone can give me ideas. Thank you

When it asks for the "Authentication Password" it wants your Peppermint password .. it will *then* prompt for your "Wireless Key/Passphrase" ;)

Another option might be to right-click the networkmanager icon (by clock) and select "Edit Connections" .. then delete ALL wiirless network profiles .. close networkmanager.
Now normal-click the network manager icon .. and select your network.

No, I tried my Peppermint password but the same thing happens again. The dialog says "Authentication required by wifi network" and it has that "show password" checkbox too. I am sure i'm entering the correct password, i've tried over a hundred times since the morning I think.

Have you deleted all wireless network profiles from within networkmanager .. then tried again ?

I tried this earlier too, that didn't help either. :( I also tried different networks around and my phone's hotspot and it does the same thing with all of them

OK, what's the output from
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
iwlist scan
connecting to the router via an ethernet cable is going to make posting those outputs much easier ;)

OK, the difference is your previous netbook had an Atheros wireless chip .. the new one has a Broadcom chip.

So we  need to sort out the Broacom drivers/firmware....

First let's get rid of the old persistent network rules, and change the network name for the new ones .. this isn't 100% necessary, but can't hurt

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
and make it read:-
Code: [Select]
# This file was automatically generated by the /lib/udev/write_net_rules
# program, run by the persistent-net-generator.rules rules file.
#
# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single
# line, and change only the value of the NAME= key.

# PCI device 0x11ab:0x4354 (sky2)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="e8:11:32:73:8c:7e", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

# PCI device 0x14e4:0x4727 (brcmsmac)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="e0:ca:94:3d:f9:92", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="wlan*", NAME="wlan0"
SAVE the file .. then REBOOT.

Once rebooted, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
then REBOOT again.

Now test wireless .. if it still doesn't work. please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
lsmod
