Can't detect the scanner for my Canon Pixma MG2450 [SOLVED]
« on: February 15, 2015, 05:37:00 pm »
Hello there,

I've been using Peppermint 5 on my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 1720 for the last 6 months, and it works like a charm. The only problem I have is that I recently changed my printer to a Canon Pixma MG 2450. I installed it from the printer manager, and the printing part works fine. However, I've not been able to have the scanner be detected.
I installed sane-utils then ran sane-find-scanner, but the tool did not find any scanner. Could it be that the scanner is not supported for this printer?

Thanks in advance,
Bidule

Download this file:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0100005517/01/scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz
unpack it.

Then install (in this order) the "scangearmp-common" and "scangearmp-mg2400series" packages for your architecture (32 or 64bit Peppermint)

Then run:
Code: [Select]
scangearmp
and let us know what happens

If you're not sure of your architecture, or which packages to install, please post the output from
Code: [Select]
uname -a

If the direct download link above doesn't work, go here:
http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/products/Fax__Multifunctionals/InkJet/PIXMA_MG_series/PIXMA_MG2450.aspx?type=download&language=&os=Linux
and download the "MG2400 series ScanGear MP Ver. 2.20 for Linux (debian Packagearchive)" file

Yep, that fixed the problem! I can now access the scanner from the ScanGear application. Still can't use the SimpleScan tool, but that's not a big deal.

Thanks a lot, very impressed by your responsiveness!

No SimpleScan (or Xsane) won't work as the Canon scanner uses a proprietary communication protocol.

Did the ScanGear package install a menu item ? .. or are you having to fire it up from the command line ?

If there's no menu item, follow these instructions:-

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/scangermp.desktop
when a BLANK file opens, make it read:-
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Canon ScanGear
Comment=Scan Documents
Exec=scangearmp
Icon=scanner
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=true
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Graphics;Scanning;
SAVE the file.

You should now have a new menu item called "Canon ScanGear" in the same menu as "Simple Scan".

Yes indeed, launching from the command line seemed to be the only option. So thanks for the menu fix! Now everything works just fine. Excellent!
