I can't install it on the HDD [Solved]
« on: February 13, 2015, 12:50:06 pm »
Hello, I am trying to install peppermint 5 on my netbook but I am having some issues. I'v searched lot of things and still didn't find anything so that's why I'm here.

So my problem is:

- I have peppermintOS on my usb (I have also tried with a CD)
- When the installer starts I select the language, the updates...etc
- After all that it automatically selects that I want to install peppermint on the USB (with the cd also did the same but it said that there was no space on the CD)
- Inside peppermint i opened gparted to see if I see the disk with windows and I cant find it (I also tried sudo fdisk -l and nothing happens)

So what i have to do for replacing windows with peppermint?
Thanks

So what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l?

This is odd  :-\.  You say you are able to open GParted while you are using the Live Session.  From make and model of your machine and because you are running WinXP.  Your Windows partition should show up as an NTFS partition.

I know, Is very strange :'(

When I open gparted it says: Invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sr0 (when executing the live version on a CD)

Here is the output of fdisk -l and the gparted software:

From what I just seen on the inxi -F the drive is only 497 Megs, so something is wrong, there is no way windows xp would install on a drive that small...  Both linux and windows xp require at least 6 gigs or more space to install and function properly...   :)
Maybe it would be wise to post a screen shot of what you see when you run gparted from a live boot cd or usb, so we can determine what is going on.....

Its because is detecting only the CDRom, on the Cd i have that space left. The HDD of the netbook is 256 GB but it doesn't detect it

You have a screenshot of my gparted on my previous message: https://www.dropbox.com/s/igu9zq3bq2ucnxa/gparted.jpg?dl=0

Something is not right, does the xp partition on the hard drive still boot up?
It almost seems like the hard drive is not working at all.  :)

For some reason it is not showing in gparted, which is something I have never come across on a machine as of yet, Hopefully pcnetspec has an idea what this may be...
Every machine I have ever installed linux on via a usb or cd when I run gparted before the install it always shows me the hard drive...  Sorry I was no help for you but mark should pop in shortly he always has ideas....  :)

Linux isn't seeing your hard drive AT ALL  :-\

Any output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C disk?

if not, you're going to have to run:
Code: [Select]
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg.txtyou'll then find a file called dmesg.txt on the desktop .. host that file somewhere and provide a link to it in your next posting.
