Newer peppremints won't connect to internet
« on: February 09, 2015, 08:51:39 pm »
My Toshiba satellite with Althos wifi is running 4 distros Peppermint 1 , PC Linux , Mint Cinnamon & Ubuntu 12.  I can connect wifi to Netgear Rangemax   with  the first 2 distros but not with the last 2. all work with Ethernet cable or My Wallmart " Internet On The Go". and  most public wifis
Toshiba connects  with older live distros:Peppermint 2, Knopix 5 , Mint 10 , Ubuntu 10 . the newer distros do not connect  (except for the Puppys they all work ) they actually shut down the Netgear while trying to connect. I'm looking for some logical reasoning for this. I would like to upgrade and not have replace My Netgear.  I'd like to keep the Mint Family.

a) if your router can be "shut down" by a wireless signal from a PC, there's something wrong.

b) sounds like a driver issue .. (from within a recent Peppermint version) what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
and
Code: [Select]
sudo iwlist scan
and
Code: [Select]
iwconfig
and
Code: [Select]
rfkill list

You can omit the 'phy' or 'dev' if the identification is unique,
e.g. "iw wlan0 info" or "iw phy0 info". (Don't when scripting.)

Do NOT screenscrape this tool, we don't consider its output stable.

Hi Marzolfman, I see that the outputs you returned are very long.  In future, could you please encapsulate long outputs with the Sp Spoiler function.  This is located in the forum editor, just above the crying  :'( emoticon.  It makes it much easier for people to read and keeps things neat and tidy.  This time I've done this for you.  Thanks in advance ;).

If your network is called "Netgear" it's being discovered, so what makes you say it won't connect ? .., what happens when you click the networkmanager icon by the clock, select your network, then enter your wireless key ?
