I do a panel on the left side as a dockbar for all my top apps.  It's just awesome how much customization you can do.

I'm a big fan of Cairo Dock not really for any practical reasons I just like the look of it but that said I'd be kinda lost without it, I have it set to appear on mouse hover so it doesn't take up any space except on an empty desktop and it's amazingly configurable

It might look a bit appleish but since when did Apple have exclusive rights on how a desktop should look , conversely I've always placed my main panel on the top because I wanted it to look different from Windows and now it just seems the natural place for it to be.

All the above might seem a wee bit strange but that's the beauty of Linux, it allows you to be a wee bit strange
