OK yes I have a 16Gb flash drive.
Sorry that I kept disappearing - dinner and trying to find an important letter! (from Sheriffs as they are messing up trying to get money back from a shyster who took money then never gave me a car I paid for !) Anyway got the letter now!
I also have a horrid cold thing! sniffle ! :)

OK yes i have both at my fingertips ... :)
I can also use a big spare external drive that I have (in case the 16Gb isn't big enough).
I see that it's recommended that I use the chksum but do I really need to ? :D
OK ready when you are ! :D TY v v v much! :)

Oh I'm on my Dell whiz laptop so it ought to make life 'easy' :D hehehehe

Let's try one more time to reset the password, but slightly differently this time

Turn ON your netbook, and as soon as your BIOS POST screen disappears, press the SHIFT key and hold it, until you are presented with the GRUB menu .. SIMILAR to this:
(you won't have long to hit the shift key, and the timing can be a little awkward, so it may even be easier to hit AND HOLD the Shift key DURING the BIOS POST .. ie. immediately after turning on your PC)

Select the 'default' kernel (usually the top one), and rather than pressing enter, press E to edit.

You will be presented with a screen SIMILAR to this:

Press DOWN ARROW until you get to the line that starts with:

Quote
linux /boot

and press the END key to position the cursor at the end of the that line... it *usually* ends with “quiet splash”.

enter a space, then init=/bin/bash

so  the line now ends with quiet splash init=/bin/bash

Now hit Ctrl+X to boot.

You should now end up at a # prompt.

Now run:
Code: [Select]
mount -o rw,remount /
and hit enter

then run:
Code: [Select]
ls /home
(for clarity that;s LS /HOME but it MUST be all lower case)

That should return the username

then run:
Code: [Select]
passwd username
(replacing username with the username you found earlier)

You should be prompted to "Enter new UNIX password" .. enter your new password (remembering nothing will be echoed to screen not even ******, but it IS going in) and hit enter.

You'll be prompted to "Re-enter new UNIX password .. enter if again, and hit enter

You should be informed that the password was successfully changed.

Now hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.

then use the username you discovered and the password you just set to login

If anything doesn't work as I explained it, STOP and yell me where you got to, and what the error is

yes it's a lower case o not a zero

for clarity

mount -o rw,remount /

There are 3 spaces and one comma in that command

[EDIT]

Also be aware, if that command works it will NOT return any output, it will just leave you back at an # prompt .. if it doesn't work it will throw up an error like before

that means there are 2 accounts on this PC

If the earlier mount command worked...

run:
passwd bobo
and change that ones password

then run:
passwd savs
and change that ones password to the same password you used for the bobo account

tell me when done, or if you get any errors

You can switch users by going to

menu > Logout > Logout (button)

Then logging back on as the other user.

Windows apps .. no not reaally, SOME can be made to work but it's a royal pain and not worth the effort
An option is to run Windows inside a virtual machine, but I doubt if youur netbook will really be powerful enough.

Can we get some info about your system please .. I have a nasty feeling you may be running an old outdated version of Peppermint

Can you open a terminal
menu > Accessories > Terminal
then run:
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
and post the output back here .. just copy and paste it

be aware Linux commands ARE case sensitive, so that's a capital F in
inxi -F

I'll answer your other questions in a bit
