When you say "it's on the stick" .. do you mean you just put the FILE on the stick, or that you used a "LiveUSB creator" application to "burn" it to the stick ?

Is there anything else on the USB stick you need to keep ?

OK sry that I'm not being too clear ! Lack of knowledge & understanding ! :(
However ... I downloaded the pep v5 and then copied it to the stick. It only has a SandDisk password file but I can easily save that elsewhere (dont think I want to use it anyway) ...
It was burned on but just copied.
I didn't do that as a torrent dl.

On the lil pc I downloaded a torrent version and can't find any dialogue box to help tell me what is where! There are no icon on the screen at all (& since I deleted the bbc iplayer - on twice).
HTH

Copy that password file somewhere safe because we'll be erasing thhe USB stick

What's in this post is all done on the Windows PC...

Once you've got the Peppermint 5 32bit ISO image downloaded somewhere on the Windows PC .. download Universal USB Installer (version 1.9.5.5 or higher) from here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
(Click the blue Download UUI button to download it)

Start Universal USB Installer, and at ..

Step 1 .. In the drop down list, select PeppermintOS (may just be listed as "Peppermint")
Step 2  .. point it at the Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso image you downloaded earlier.
Step 3 .. Choose your (already plugged in >= 1GB) USB stick .. probably best to let it format it too, so backup its contents first.
Step 4 .. (if available) Set the slider to the largest persistence file it will allow you.. so you can save changes. (if you want to test drive it first)

Heres a pic of the Universal USB Installer interface

Click Create .. and wait till it's done .. it will take a while, and *may* appear to have stopped .. but just wait till it says it's "Done" .. as in the following pic

Pic of Universal USB Installer .. Installing to USB Stick

Once the LiveUSB has been created, click Close

Let me know when you've done that, or if you have any problems/questions

OK but a question or two...
Why do I need to allow it to reformat the flash drive pls?
I thought I was just going to copy it across to the lil oc that now has it (I think anyway).
I do appreciate that this maybe temporary but is it?
I just bought two SanDisks and the other wanted to keep being re-formatted so it's going back... whilst I have other drives this one has 16Gb which isn't much in this day and age!!
However I wasn't thinking of it now being dedicated to Pep ?
Can I re-format it afterwards back to a ?Win format and how ?
 :-\

No you're not just copying the file to the netbook .. you're INSTALLING Peppermint ON the netbook, which means the USB stick has to be formatted, the ISO image unpacked onto it, and the USB stick made bootable.

So we're creating an installation media/medium out of the USB stick .. which we'll then boot to for the installation.

YES, once we're done, you can just wipe the USB stick in Windows and it will be back to normal ;)

For clarity, once we're done with the install, you won't need to "format" the USB stick back to Windows .. you'll just need to delete all the files on it .. but you CAN format it if you wish.

The USB stick in NO WAY will be dedicated to Peppermint ;)

DON'T PANIC !
:)

It wiil be fine ;)

When we're done I'll explain how to reformat it in Windows .. not that that's 100% necessary, Windows will still be able to use it, it will just contain some files.

OK, make sure the netbook is switched off

Plug the USB stick into a USB port on the netbook, then turn ON the netbook.

As soon as you see the ASUS EeePC screen, hit the "Esc" key, and you should be presented with the Boot Device Selection Screen.

Use the up/down arrow keys to select the USB stick, then hit the "Enter" key to boot from the USB stick.

When asked, select "Try Peppermint" NOT "Install Peppermint"

Be aware .. running from a USB stick will be quite a bit slower that running it from the internal SSD after installation, so don't draw any conclusions about speed at this point ;)

Once you've got to a working Peppermint desktop with an "Install Peppermint" icon on it .. let me know.

Peppermint 5 is NOT yet installed on the netbook .. are you saying you cannot continue tonight ?

If so, shut down the netbook, bt DO NOT modify the USB stick yet .. we'll need that as it is to install Peppermint 5 when you're ready.
