Why do you update the xapian index?
Just curious cause i remove it from every linux install I do, because i was told it is like the equivalent to the windows index service, and should be removed because it hogs up 99% of your processor?

Stage 7 ..

Installing the extra software (part two)

Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
at some point the terminal will turn blue telling you you need to accept a license, with <ok> at the bottom ..
hit the Tab key so the <ok> is highlighted red .. hit the Enter key ..
the next screen will have <yes> <no>, again hit the Tab key so/until <yes> is highlighted red .. and hit the Enter key.

It will now install.

Once ttf-mscorefonts-installer has finished installing .. still in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras ubuntu-restricted-extras
The restricted-extras packages should now install without issue.

let me know when you've done that.

OK done all that. I did get a message up about something wanting updating but I just told it to remind me later figuring that, that was the best option - it was a dialogue box appearing on top of my T box ... ?
Ok next ? :D

Last Stage (optional) ..

Extending battery life by installing the TLP power management application

This is an optional install, but I recommend it, as when you switch from mains power to battery power, TLP will switch your CPU into power saving mode unless the CPU is under load, which will make your battery last longer.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
and hit Enter if/when prompted.

then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw smartmontools ethtool
then start tlp with:
Code: [Select]
sudo tlp start
and check it's running with:
Code: [Select]
sudo tlp-stat | grep "TLP power save"

As long as (after a reboot) that last command still returns:-

TLP power save = enabled

you're good to go ..

That's it, you're done .. pat yourself on the back and enjoy Peppermint Five :)

Any questions ?

OK Cool I'll give that a go ! :D
I think the next question already rattling around in the head is... errr...  will a reboot bring up the icons ?

Which icons ?

The icons for the software you installed will be in the menu's

Firefox, Thunderbird, and Skype will be in the "Internet" menu
LibreOffice (and it's individual components) will be in the "Office" menu
VLC will be in the "Sound & Video" menu.

but if you'd also like icons on the desktop, let me know which ones ?

OK got the icons added ... I think I'll have to bother you all again when or as I need to add programs etc ...

Just looking at light locking settings and it has under Locking:
"Enable light locker" ...but what is that pls ?
I'd rather not have to tell the lodger my password so not having it locked will be easier....
