Yep TB would be excellent ...
No it's still working on it with various pauses !
Might it go quicker if I plugged in the Ecable?

My cold-thing is really asking me to sleep now ! And you must be getting knackered - or are you on night duty! ? (I doubt it!) :D
My hat off to you cos you've been just brilliant and it is SO appreciated! :D

How do I get these on? Go online d/l and install as 'usual' or will it need these unusual to me commands and such ?
I'm interested to try Pep / Linux as some s/ware I need to use online would do better under Linux so this is an interesting development for me....

Ahha I think it's finished ! :) back at a prompt ...

NO .. you NEVER download software online in Linux (that's a bad Windows habit you'll need to break).. it's all installed through your package managers from a central repository that's kept free of malicious code (and one of the reasons you'll not require anti-virus software in Linux)
(we'll get to that in a bit)

I need you to REBOOT now

menu > Logout > Reboot

Then we can either finish forf tonight, or carry on .. up to you

Right have it rebooting but I think I have to get to sleep ...really sorry .... :( I'd normally carry on but not being well is not ideal!
Are you OK to carry on tomorrow sometime ? :D

Please re-read my last posting .. I added a bit

The "central repository" for software is ONE OF the reasons Linux is considered one of the most secure OS's there is, and why it doesn't require anti-virus and anti-malware software

and "Sure" .. I'm fine to carry on tomorrow :)

Sorry but I need to add this .. If your Windows PC EVER connects to the internet (or even your router) or you EVER install software from ANY source, you're INSANE if you don't have anti-virus software installed .. in fact I'm surprised Windows still works  :o

Ok perhaps saying none was speaking a bit too flippant! As thinking about it, I've got Ad block plus, Spybot & No script ...
and had Avast but was told with the others it's not that necessary to have Avast. I was having a prob getting a flight simulator to go to the virtual online 'airfield' so ended up (temp) removing Avast out of desperation to stop any firewalls from preventing access, and thinking about it I guess I've got Win firewalls in place... ! So I guess I do have a small army defending the puta! :D
Years back it was different though! :( Sad the way the World has become with people with such low morals and decency that they wish to cause others harm just for the hell of it! :(

On your Peppermint machine you don't have any firewall install.  You're behind a router, so you don't really need one.  If you want to have one, UFW is very good.  The default settings are more than enough for home use.  You just download it, turn it on and forget about it.  To download it open a terminal window with the following keystrokes: Ctrl+Alt+t.  Enter the following commands into the terminal window.

Tip:  Linux is case sensitive.  To reduce the possibility of typographical errors, please use the Code: [Select] function below to highlight the contents. Click on the centre mouse button/wheel while in the terminal window to paste the contents.  Note: For enhanced security, passwords are entered invisibly.  There is NO indication of any user input.  You may enter an incorrect password 3 times before you have to repeat the action you are trying to apply.
Code: [Select]
apt install ufw -y
Hit enter and do the password thing.  Let it install and then enter:
Code: [Select]
sudo ufw enable
Hit enter and that's it,  all done  ;)!!
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!
For my system info please L/click HERE.

gufw would be a better idea as it gives you a graphical front end for ufw .. but as you say, it's usually not necessary if you're behind a NAT router

Thanks for the ongoing advice. Most gratefully received.
I'm too ill to carry on tonight sadly so I'm going to bed. I have to be up early too which isn't helping! :(
But later tomorrow ought to be fine if you are about? If not just say when you will be and I'll make sure that I am about too! :D Thanks.

I'm always "about", so yeah whenever you're ready...

Thanks for letting me know though. Take a cup of Horlicks to bed with you, and get a good nights rest .. then I hope you feel better tomorrow (or soon) :)

"Horlicks in bed"  :o .. just saying that makes me chuckle, how childish is that  ::)

Stage 6 ..

Installing the extra software (part one).

OK, we're going to install the extra software in 2 stages .. the first stage to install most of the software .. but we'll leave out ubuntu-restricted-extras and lubuntu-restricted-extras because those packages also install the ttf-mscorefonts-installer which sometimes causes problems with it's license acceptance window.
(you WILL want these package, because they installs support for mp3, flash etc. but we'll install them later in the next stage)

In the menu, go to Accessories > Terminal

When the terminal opens, enter:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install firefox vlc libreoffice thunderbird skype openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-plugin
hit enter, and your password if/when asked .. and if it prompts you for a y/n, hit y and enter.

when that finishes run:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-apt-xapian-index

Let me know when you're done .. or if you have any problems.
