Wifi connected, but not according to browser. (SOLVED)
« on: December 29, 2014, 08:45:31 pm »
I'm an ultra-new user. I installed Peppermint 5 over Windows in my HP 3115m notebook, and I think I should not have.  Wifi is the issue: it's connected according to the taskbar icon, but browsers simply say "no internet connection." I have no idea why. Help? :'(

Hi zefareu, Firstly, a very warm welcome to the Peppermint forum  :).  I'm presuming you have set up  your wireless and entered you encryption password/passphrase.  Have you also run a post-installation system update and upgrade?  If you haven't, it is very important that you do, as it irons out many issues.  With your ethernet cable connected, please enter the following commands in sequence.  Enter the user password you created during the installation process when asked.

Open a terminal window with the following keystrokes: Cltr+Alt+t.  Enter the following command into the terminal window.

Tip:  Linux is case sensitive.  To reduce the possibility of typographical errors please use the Code: [Select] function below to highlight the contents. Click on the centre mouse button/wheel while in the terminal window to paste the contents.  Note: For enhanced security, passwords are entered invisibly.  There is NO indication of any user input.  You may enter an incorrect password 3 times before you have to repeat the action you are trying to apply.

Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgrade -y
Hit enter and enter your user password when asked.
Code: [Select]
apt dist-upgrade -y
Hit enter.

After the upgrade has completed, reboot your machine because there will very likely have been kernel upgrades.  Check if your browser now recognises your WiFi network.  If it doesn't, please don't hesitate to inform us and someone will get you up and running - good luck  ;)!!

Edit: To clean up your system after performing upgrades, you can run the following commands in sequence.  Enter your user password if asked and select (Y)es when prompted.
Code: [Select]
apt clean
Code: [Select]
apt autoclean
Code: [Select]
apt autoremove

With ONLY a wireless connection (no cabled ethernet)....

Can you open a terminal and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig
and
Code: [Select]
iwconfig
and
Code: [Select]
iwlist scanning
and
Code: [Select]
rfkill list
and
Code: [Select]
ping -c 3 74.125.230.99
and
Code: [Select]
ping -c 3 google.com

AndyInMokum -- That seems to have worked! THANK YOU! I am getting internet now through wifi, though it's very very slow and seems to kind of come and go. I'm not complaining -- it's 100% better than it was! In case speeding it up might be an option, I'm pasting the outputs that PCNetSpec recommends. With Wifi connected, and ethernet cable unplugged:

AndyInMokum -- That seems to have worked! THANK YOU! I am getting internet now through wifi, though it's very very slow and seems to kind of come and go. I'm not complaining -- it's 100% better than it was! In case speeding it up might be an option, I'm pasting the outputs that PCNetSpec recommends. With Wifi connected, and ethernet cable unplugged:

Hi zefareu, Its my pleasure - happy you are connected ;).  I'm sure PCNetSpec will help you get it up to speed, if at all possible.

I see that the outputs you returned are very long.  In future, could you please encapsulate long outputs with the Sp Spoiler function.  This is located just above the crying  :'( emoticon.  It makes it much easier for people to read and keeps things neat and tidy.  This time I've done this for you.  Thanks in advance.  Have a very Happy New Year ;).

You seem to have a lot of overlapping wireless networks in your vicinity, quite a few of which are on the same channel as you (channel 1) .. it would be a good idea to set your router to an unused channel such as channel 8

Can you also post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C network
So we can get an idea which wireless adapter you have, and which driver is being used.

I changed router to channel 8... so far, it does seem more stable.

Here's the results of sudo lshw -C network

If you're still having problems (?) you could try the proprietary Broadcom "wl" wireless driver instead of the open source "brcmsmac" driver.
(both are supposed to work with a Broadcom BCM4313)

Let me know if you'd like to try this, and need assistance.

You know what i find strange on this forum compared to other Linux forums??? Nobody ask the topic starter in the very first reply about the hardware specification used..... Everybody is just throwing in answers and solutions hoping that it fixes the topic starters problem..... It took 5 replies to ask the correct question.... weird.....

Ok, knowing now that you have a Broadcom device, take a look here: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#Ubuntu.2FDebian
Also install the following package: firmware-linux-nonfree. This package contains lots of drivers which isn't installed by default since those drivers are non-free (closed-source). Open a terminal and type the following command:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Do you have Bluetooth on your laptop? And you don't use it? Remove the Bluetooth module! It is known that Wifi and Bluetooth interfere with each other.

Before doing anything above can you post the output of the following terminal command:
Code: [Select]
rfkill list wlan

And yet the very first answer solved the original issue ;)

AndyInMokum was quite right to first suggest a full system update .. experience suggests this often fixes a lot of issues (wireless included) and should always be the first thing to try .. then take things from there.

My first response was to check if there was indeed a wireless connection issue as the OP suggested there might not be .. it could just as easily have been a DNS issue that was causing the webpage not to load.
(no point in looking for a hardware issue before knowing one actually exists)

Then the OP said AndyInMokums "update" fixed the issue, but the issue now became one of speed .. my next response was to get the hardware info.

So where's the problem in that sequence of events ?

lshw output (and the fact the wireless is working) suggests the "firmware" for the adapter is already loaded  :-\

Quote
driver=brcmsmac driverversion=3.13.0-43-generic firmware=610.812

So I'm a bit baffled how linux-firmware-nonfree will help ?

AFAIK, the Broadcom BCM4313 isn't covered by the b43 driver that your link suggests .. only brcmsmac and wl  :-\

I'm also interested to see how the output from rfkill is going to be helpful for an already working wireless connection ?

Hi nomko, whenever I see an OP introduce themselves as a nOOb, I like to make sure that their system is up to date and synced.  Experience has show me that many first time users are unaware that they need to do this.  After I have established a common base from where to work from, I can then ask the appropriate questions; if necessary.  I find this approach streamlines things, without adding to the confusion.  As PCNetSpec has pointed out, a standard update and upgrade fixes many common issues without the need for further investigation.  This is precisely what it did in this case  ;).

OP here, and things seem to be working and stable now. THANK YOU SO MUCH for quickly identifying the problem! I searched and tried a dozen things for the past several months, and obviously I should have come here first.  :P

Great news, and for my part you're more than welcome :)

When you're happy this issue is solved, can you please remember to mark the topic (SOLVED) .. you can do this by editing the FIRST posting in this topic and changing:-

Subject: Wifi connected, but not according to browser. (SOLVED)

Thanks in advance :)
