can't get dropbox to work (SOLVED)
« on: December 08, 2014, 08:16:35 pm »
Dropbox worked fine at first. But now it does not open at startup and I can't even open it from the "Internet" section of the LXPanel menu. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanx.

I just figured out a solution: I uninstalled "peppermint-dropbox" using Synaptic, then I went over to the Dropbox website and followed the instructions for installing Dropbox onto a server using the terminal/command line. Then I reinstalled "peppermint-dropbox" and now it's working again. Not sure how or why this worked, or if it was even necessary to uninstall/reinstall "peppermint-dropbox" but anyhow it worked. Hope this helps anyone who gets the same problem on their laptop.

Dropbox stopped working again. Tried everything, including full system update/upgrade, nothing worked. So I ditched Peppermint and installed Runtu OS, where EVERYTHING, including Dropbox, works OUT-OF-THE-BOX. Thanks and bye.

It is also working fine for me.  Everything is syncing very nicely.  I configured it in a Live session yesterday with no problems as well :-\.

SamuelWhiskey yesterday was also having issues with Dropbox: http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,1329.msg11781.html#msg11781.  He said he'd found a solution from another forum.  I've asked him for more info.  I hope he comes back with a reply.

Yeah, that's why I asked :)

Odd, because the version in the Peppermint specific repo

a) hasn't changed

b) still works for me (and you guys) .. so unlikely to be a change in the dropbox server framework, or an updated Ubuntu package that's breaking things

c) should ALWAYS take preference over any updated version in the Ubuntu repos

So  I'm a bit baffled why 2 people had problems with it so close together  :-\

[EDIT]

As soon as I get the chance I'll try it in a clean install in a VM

Read at another distro's forum that the release of Dropbox 3.0.3 fixed a lot of bugs in v. 3.0.2. So I installed Peppermint 5 on my older laptop and found that DB works OK now. So apparently it was Dropbox 3.0.2 that was the problem.

Hi rossvassilev, many thanks for the feedback - very cool  8).  I sure this will be picked up and looked into.  Happy to hear Dropbox is functioning normally on your other machine  ;)!!

OK, I've tested this twice, in a fresh install and in a VM .. and as long as I ran a full system update first, dropbox downloaded and installed when I selected the

menu > Internet > Dropbox

menu item.

So for me, both times it worked as expected  :-\

Both attempts were in 32bit Peppermint 5 .. sp now I just need to test 64bit

Well, Dropbox stopped working on my desktop. I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Peppermint and nada. So I uninstalled Peppermint on my desktop and installed Lubuntu, with which so far I've NEVER had probs with DB. It still works fine on my laptop so I'm keeping Peppermint installed on that (for now, anyway...). Can't understand what's up with Peppermint and DB. It's Peppermint's one shortcoming, but a BIG ONE as so many people rely on DB for their file storage/sync/backup. Oh well.  :-\

It may have helped if you'd have given us any output from trying to start it from the command line ;)

I'm still not convinced there *is* a problem with Peppermint 5 and Dropbox (other than the need to be fully updated) .. it works for me, and every other system I've ever installed it on  :-\

So until shown otherwise I can only assume it coincidental.

can't get dropbox to work [SOLVED]
« Reply #14 on: January 29, 2015, 10:32:25 am »
The same now happened with Lubuntu on my desktop. It seems that Dropbox 3.0.5 has been giving many users problems throughout the Linux distros, Windows and Mac, too https://www.dropboxforum.com/hc/communities/public/questions/201545695-After-upgrade-to-3-x-the-dropbox-tray-icon-is-missing-XFCE-Xubuntu-14-04-1-x64-. My solution was to dump DB and replace it with AeroFS https://www.aerofs.com/, which has all the same features as Dropbox but with UNLIMITED storage.  :D
