how do I set up pptp vpn?
« on: December 08, 2014, 12:42:18 pm »
There are loads of guides on how to setup pptp vpn using the network manager however I think there is something missing in Peppermint 5?

The drop down where you'd expect to see some option for selecting pptp is empty below 'Automatically connect to vpn using this connection'.

I'd really like to get this sorted ASAP as I'm in a hotel on an unsecured connection.

I'd include a screenshot but can't figure out even how to do that!

Hi madwoollything, try left clicking on the the network icon in the panel.  At the end of the popup/drop-down menu, (this depends whether you have the panel at the bottom of your screen or the top)  you will see, VPN Conections.  From there you will see, Configure VPN ....  Click on this and a VPN setup window will open.  Right click on VPN and then the Add button in the right hand panel.  From here, follow your instructions to set up a pptp vpn.  I use loads of them, so it does work  - have fun  ;)!!

Edit: For screenshots, navigate to menu > Accessories > Screenshot  ;).

I just remembered, there is a really nice VPN extension for Google Chrome called, ZenMate.  I suppose it will be also available for Chromium Browser.  It provides VPN connections for: Germany, Switzerland, USA, UK and Hong Kong.  It is only browsers specific but it works really well.  Have fun  ;).

Thanks but the drop down on the General Tab the  'Automatically connect to VPN when using this connection' does nothing and the dropdown immediately below for selecting which vpn type is 'blank'. Other guides I've seen seem to indicate that this should show either openvpn or pptp?

All I can conclude is that something is missing from the network manager setup - a missing package?

I'd include a screenshot of the problem but cannot figure out how to get a picture into this post!

Try running:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager-openvpn-gnome network-manager-openvpn network-manager-pptp-gnome network-manager-pptp
then log off/on

Now see if you can configure VPN through networkmanager

Hi, you need to host the images in a site like imgur.com or postimage.org.  Instructions on how to post images can be found at this site: Posting Images to The Forum.  Good for future reference.  I hope this helps  ;).

Thanks for your help.
I've reinstalled the suggested packages and checked that they are fully installed by inspecting the entries from synaptic.

Unfortunately the same problems still exists - see screenshot

Any thoughts?

This as a clean installation of Peppermint 5 onto an acer aspire netbook a couple of months ago. Not many changes made to the base system. All system updates are have been installed and synaptic is not showing any broken packages.

The "Automatically connect to VPN when using this connection" will be blank until you've defined/configured a VPN tunnel.

Click the networkmanager icon in your system tray and select
VPN Connections > Configure VPN....

Click the "Add+" button.

In the drop menu, select
VPN > Point-To-Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP)

Click the "Create" button.

Configure your VPN, and SAVE the settings.

You'll now have a saved VPN that should show up under the "Automatically connect to VPN when using this connection" for a wireless connection in networkmanager.

did that make sense ?

Great ........ I've been able to set up a VPN connection using my credentials.

Unfortunately the default PPTP settings don't appear to work as I'm unable to get a connection. (My Nexus 7 had no problem setting up a VPN connection with just the default settings). I've spent some time trying to find solutions and have tried a number of options with the default settings without really understanding what is happening.

If I didn't mention earlier but my VPN server is set up on a Raspberry Pi if that makes any difference?

Any ideas what might be wrong with my client VPN setup in Peppermint 5?

You'd have to say how the VPN server is configured on the Pi

Are you using openvpn on the Pi ?
