« on: December 07, 2014, 04:46:05 am »
Hello,
I tried to install Peppermint 5 on an old PC but when I select "installl peppermint" or "try peppermint" nothing happens. How can I install it (if it is possible)?

When you say "nothing happens", do you mean it

a) sits n the same screen, still offering you those options

b) Screen turns black with no text

c) screen turns black with text

etc. ?

I can choose from the 5-6 options, when I hit enter then it does not go further.

You're still not understanding/answering  my question :)

After hitting enter, does it stay on the same screen (still offering you the same options) ?

and if so, are you still able to move the highlight, or does it lock up completely.

Describe what happens on the screen after hitting enter.

Sorry, I didn't pay attention.

It stays on the same screen with the highlight locked.

Is this a LiveCD or LiveUSB stick ?

Have you tested the LiveCD/LiveUSB on another PC (selecting the "Try Peppermint" option) ?

If LiveUSB -

Have you tried recreating the LiveUSB stick using a different LiveUSB creator ?

On which OS are you creating the LiveUSB ? .. Linux or Windows ?

If LiveCD -

have you tried re-burning ?

or as mentioned above testing the LiveCD on another PC

It is a live-USB, I created two, neither of them worked. It was created on Win7. I'll try installing it on another PC this evening.

No need to "install" it on another PC .. just test the LiveUSB works when selecting "Try Peppermint".

If it does work, at least we've ruled out the USB stick as the problem.

Which application are you using to create the LiveUSB ? .. and on Windows or Linux ?

I tried a couple of things this evening.

Old PC
USB stick & CD: the screen with option appears, after hit enter it stays the same screen with the highlight locked

Another PC and laptop:
USB stick & CD: both work fine

You're still not answering my questions.

Which application are you using to create the LiveUSB ?

And after hittng the Enter key do the keyboard lights start to flash ?

When the PC appears to lock up, if you hit the Tab key, is any text displayed on screen ?

you might want to find out how old this machine is Mark, he may have one of those NON PAE processors which would explain why it works on his other pc and not the original machine he is complaining about it locking up...  If I remember correctly when p5 came out and i tried to run it on my old laptop it would not work and froze also till we found out my laptop was NON PAE...  :P

@rjm65

Yeah that had crossed my mind .. it's certainly going to be an old PC if it has an AthlonXP,  but the AthlonXP is supposed to support PAE  :-\

It *is* however a 32bit CPU

@zephyrir

You are usingPeppermint 5 32bit right ?

Hi zephyrir, lets try this.  On the machine you have Lubuntu installed, download the Peppermint Five 32 bit ISO: Peppermint Five Downloads.   Now install UNetbootinUNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives.  Open a terminal window and enter the following command to install it to your Lubuntu machine:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install unetbootin -yEnter your password and hit enter.  Have a usb thumb-drive formatted to FAT 32 ready.  I know it is overkill but I recommend at least 8GB just to be sure it will work.  Insert it into the Lubuntu machine and make sure it is mounted.  Now fire up UNetbootin from: menu > System Tools.  Install the Peppermint ISO to your thumb-drive.   After it has finished installing, reboot your machine into the Peppermint Live session.  Let us know how you get on.  I hope this helps - good luck  ;).
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!
