Touchpad not working on Acer Aspire One P1VE6
« on: November 29, 2014, 02:12:31 pm »
I booted up Peppermint OS 5 from a USB drive on my Acer netbook and it works great. Only one problem though. The touchpad and buttons do not work at all. I checked the settings and the touchpad is enabled. The keyboard works find and a mouse plugged into the USB does work but that solution is less than ideal.

This is the one thing keeping me from making this my permanent OS on this computer so if someone could help that would be awesome!

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
xinput --list

[EDIT]

Also .. have you run a full system update yet, and rebooted afterwards ?

For now ignore this link .. I'm putting it here for future reference:

Here is the output:

⎡ Virtual core pointer                       id=2   [master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer                 id=4   [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎜   ↳ Logitech USB Receiver                      id=13   [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard                      id=3   [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard                id=5   [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                               id=6   [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus                                  id=7   [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                               id=8   [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button                               id=9   [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ 1.3M WebCam                                id=10   [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard               id=11   [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ Acer WMI hotkeys                           id=12   [slave  keyboard (3)]

I haven't done any updates because it's running off a USB drive for now.

Try this .. it may or may not wrk with your LiveUSB depending on persistence.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic dkms
then
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/touchpad-driver
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/touchpad-driver
then
Code: [Select]
wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1166442/+attachment/3941591/+files/psmouse-elantech-x551c.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dkms ldtarball psmouse-elantech-x551c.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v elantech-x551c
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod psmouse
then (even if that last command failed)
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe psmouse
does your touchpad now work ?

To UNDO:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/touchpad-driver
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dkms uninstall -m psmouse -v elantech-x551c
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dkms remove psmouse/elantech-x551c --all
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod psmouse
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe psmouse

This also *may* not be necessary on a properly installed and updated system.

I ended up doing an update just to see what would happen and the touchpad is now working. Thanks for your help!
