Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 - Bluetooth issue
« on: November 22, 2014, 06:41:43 pm »
Ok, i've spent a good part of the latest days googling my [snip] off, plowing through threads on forums and found some people having this problem but none of the solutions worked for me.

Searching for devices doesn't yield any results even though there i a phone next to the computer with bluetooth on and set to visible. The phone doen't see the computer either.

some info:

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod
but as the output will be rather long, please encapsulate it in spoiler tags when posting it.

According to this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2234900&page=4&p=13167585#post13167585
it's not supported in the 3.13 kernel series.

You could try the 3.18 kernel.

Or compile the mentioned commit into a 3.13 kernel

Okay.

how do i try the 3.18 kernel? I do not find it in the repositories. To compile a commit into my current kernel is probably way to advanced for my level of linux-knowhow without a detailed step-by-step guide....

Thanks for the help!

OK, let's try the latest kernel from 15.04 (3.18-rc5)

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/kernel-3.18-rc5-temp
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/kernel-3.18-rc5-temp
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic_3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc5-vivid/linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5_3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035_all.deb
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-rc5-vivid/linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic_3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035_amd64.deb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
then REBOOT

Just in case there's a problem booting .. remember, hitting the Shift key immediately after the BIOS POST screen should bring up the GRUB boot menu .. where you should be able to select the  current 3.13 kernel to boot into.

After reboot the computer completely froze with:

Code: [Select]

After second reboot I tapped the shift key, but no grub boot menu but - the boot completed.

The bluetooth unfortunately doesn't work now either and a startup command I had to lower the brightness seems to be not run. Any way to totally revert what I just did?

Shut down the PC .. turn ON the PC and immediately hit AND HOLD the Shift key.

When at the GRUB menu, select "Advanced options"

Then select the 3.13 kernel .. and hit enter to boot.

Once booted, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep 3.18

oh, and:

Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -l | grep 3.18
ii  linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5                              3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035               all          Header files related to Linux kernel version 3.18.0
ii  linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic                      3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035               amd64        Linux kernel headers for version 3.18.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii  linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic                        3.18.0-031800rc5.201411162035               amd64        Linux kernel image for version 3.18.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

Seems to be no way to enter grub menu with pressing shift, I had to modify /etc/default/grub to show it. Can it be because I boot in UEFI mode?

Anyway, can I simply uninstall the three packages I just installed to go back to "normal"? Absence of bluetooth is not fatal for me, most other thing works so good so I don't want to screw this sytem up too much...

OK, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5 linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc5-generic
then reboot normally and check it boots into the 3.13 kernel automagically.

Ok, back to 3.13 and things working as they should a part from bluetooth. Phew....

Thank you so much for the time spent here, I suppose I can live with non-bluetooth. Probably I will put som distro with working BT on a pendrive to use when I want to transfer files to/from phones and stuff. As I said I can live with that and I suspect BT will work in peppermint 6 :)

Again, thanks for the time!
