wireless not connecting (SOLVED)
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:00:31 pm »
[SOLVED] Reinstalled peppermintos and now the ralink wireless is working.

I have a Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter that shows my network and others after sudo iwlist scanning, but none show up in Wicd Network Manager. I also have a Netgear N300 wireless usb adapter that does show the all networks in Wicd, but I keep getting BAD PASSWORD when I try to connect to any network.

Do they show up under networkmanager ?

Have you "fixed" WiCD: as per the instructions here:
http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5916

Why are you using WiCD instead of nnetworkmanager ?

Are these connections using IPv6 which WiCD doesn't support ?

Something you should do, but isn't what's causing this .. ALL wireless access points around you are using channel 11 .. it would be a good idea to change your router to say channel 6

I don't think so, only wlan0 and wlan1 show up.  I am using Wicd because I didn't know the wireless connections should show up in network.  :-[  and because of this http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1498035.html. I also tried running my router without a password just to see if it would connect and it would not. I do not believe these are IPv6 connections because they are over 3 years old. I nnetworkmanager the application found under system tools->network?

Ignoring wicd for the moment....

What happens if you click the NetworkManager icon in the system tray (by the clock) .. is your wireless network listed ?

Can you open a terminal and tell me if there's any output from this command:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [n]m-applet

Have you specifically uninstalled networkmanager ?

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
nohup nm-applet
did a new icon appear by the clock ?

Yes I believe I uninstalled network manager because I read of a conflict between it and Wicd. The output  is

nohup: ignoring input and appending output to ‘nohup.out’
nohup: failed to run command ‘nm-applet’: No such file or directory

Can you connect via ethernet cable ?

or did you pre-download networkmanager so you could reinstall it if wicd went wrong ?

if so, reinstall it:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome network-manager

Do you get a second icon if you run:
Code: [Select]
nohup nm-applet
and what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat ~/.config/autostart/nm-applet.desktop

is there a second networking icon by the clock ? .. if so is your network listed when you click it ?

if not, what's the output (if any) from:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep [n]m-applet
