Login screen theme change
« on: November 17, 2014, 02:36:44 pm »
Is it possible to make the background grey colour of the password-box at the Login screen, transparent?   8)

I tried a plain grey, then a simple themed background in grey, and liked the effect of this psuedo transparency.

Looking at the "gksu gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf" file, is the line "theme-name=Peppermint-Light" a good start point or I'm way of base.  :-\

Something tells me it will be defined somewhere in its cascading style sheet
/usr/share/themes/Peppermint-Light/gtk-3.0/apps/lightdm-gtk-greeter.css

But I don't know for sure .. or even if it's editable at all

There is a topic somewhere on here about using the panth3eon or mdm gtreeter insteead of the default lightdm-gtk-greeter

Thanks for the pointer, I couldn't work out the css, not sure if I was looking at the right one, any way beyond my current skill set, but I did achieve one of my objectives, and have a uniform colour scheme throughout. Including the Login screen.  :-*

I changed the Login screen gedit file at "theme=peppermint-light" to "Ambiance-XFCE-LXDE-Aqua" and icons from "Faenza" to "iLinux". This changed the look and feel of the password box, that became a psuedo transparent screen with the new grey/peppermint themed background. Simple but efective and a striking combo. IMO.   8)

https://sites.google.com/site/peppermintfivedesktop/  you can see from this photo I took of the Login screen, new colour themes on menu bar and black bar across top of screen,

LightDM GTK Greeter is a nightmare to theme/modify.  It's possible, but the migraines involved make it hard to justify as "worthwhile."

Anyway, if you want to take a shot at it,  there is not much in the way of useful documentation.   On top of that, the various "upgrades" and version changes make tricks that used to work not work anymore.   All in all, it is a very shot-in-the-dark, balancing act of modifying the CSS and conf files.

So, in the countless hours I spent working on a LightDM GTK Greeter theme, I never got it where I wanted it and eventually gave up. This is as far as I got with it though:

Sorry, it's a photo from my phone of the screen, so image quality is poor.

What I did was create a separate GTK theme from what I use on my desktop, and set it as my LightDM theme.  I found that this was easier than trying to experiment/break/repair one unified theme.

If you figure anything out, please share.  And, good luck with the battle of the LightDM Greeters.
