Hi lukemersh, thanks for choosing Peppermint Five.  I was just reading how you find Peppermint Five less responsive than Mint 8.  Have you run a full update and dist-upgrade.  If you haven't done so, run these following commands in the terminal.
Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgrade
and finally
Code: [Select]
apt dist-upgrade
Now reboot your machine.  I hope this helps - have fun  ;)!!

I am going to run these commands...
maybe it will run a little faster.

Theoretically update-manager should pop up automagically when updates are available .. that said, some users have reported that it doesn't for them.

So your options are:-
a) manually run update-manager every now and again

or

b) replace update-manager with mintupdate (which will also give you the shield icon on the bottom panel as in mint)

Ask if you want help with this

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/default/locale
and
Code: [Select]
cat ~/.config/peppermint-control-center/keyboard_layout

Are you after US english, or GB english ?

Do you also want the keyboard layout changing ?

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo cp -v /etc/default/locale /etc/default/locale-old
then
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/default/locale
and when the file opens, make it read just:-
Code: [Select]
LANG="en_GB.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_GB:en"
SAVE the file .. then log off/on to test.
