Have you got access to a Windows PC ?

If not, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls /home
and can you show me what your command prompt line reads.

eg;
mark@AA1-Blue ~ $
(I don't need the colours .. I only added those for clarity)

Cool .. shouldn't take long.

The Peppermint ISO image is an isohybrid image, so you can write it directly to the USB stick (sector-by-sector with the "dd" (or "cat") command.

dd = data duplicator
(data duplicator is not the actual name or function of "dd" .. yuo can find out more here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd_%28Unix%29)

the command is doing
sudo = open with elevated privileges
dd = the "dd" application
if=Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso = input file (Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso)
of=/dev/sdb = output file (the USB stick /dev/sdb)
bs=1M = read, then write it in 1 megabyte chunks (byte-size)

make sense ?

It was installing fine until i pressed something and it crashed, so re-installing again and letting it do its own thing,
jumped straight in and clicked install and not try.

Quick note .. before you can use this USB stick as a "normal" USB stick again, you'll have to either

a) In Linux/Peppermint use "Disks" or" GParted" to write a new msdos partition table, then format it as FAT32
or
b) In Windows use the HP USB format utility to format the USB stick .. you can download that from my dropbox here:

Which model of AA1, and is it a hard drive or SSD ?

I take it you can boot to the Peppermint LiveUSB desktop ?

YES.......

But before we do, can you answer my last question .. does the LiveUSB boot to a working Peppermint desktop if you select "Try Peppermint" ?

At this point if I had to "guess" I'd say you have a screwed hard drive with bad sectors .. but there's a small possibility it's either a corrupt ISO image, or bad write to the USB stick.

So you have access to a Windows PC ?

So what happens if you actually do what I suggest and select "Try Peppermint" ?

You boot to the USB stick .. it will give you a few options

Try Peppermint
Install Peppernint
Check disk for defects
Memtest86+
etc.

just hightlight the top option "Try Peppermint" (already selected) and hit enter .. it should boot a fully functional version of Peppermint running from the USB stick (what's on, or not on the hard drive is irrelevant)

I just need to know if that works ?
