Installing Peppermint on Acer Aspire one running Linux mint 8
« on: November 16, 2014, 01:35:55 pm »
I have installed linux mint 8 on my Acer Aspire one running Linux mint 8 which is ok but unfortunately obselete and can not update.
Peppermint was also recommended, but I am unable to install it over linux mint 8 using Uneboot.
I get to the screen showing the installation types , which in my case only show "default" it counts down and then loops back to counting down and does not boot up properly.

Can anybody help me with this.?

many thanks

Have you got access to a Windows PC, or is Mint 8 still bootable ?

Download this file
http://peppermintos.com/iso/Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso

and put it on the Mint 8 desktop

Plug in your USB stick and post the output from running
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
in a terminal

If you already have the Peppermint 5 32bit ISO image, there's no need to download it again .. just copy it to the Mint 8 desktop

then with the USB stick you want to put it on plugged in, send the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
and I'll tell you what to do next

I just need you to have the file Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso on your desktop, and to know where your USB stick is being mounted.

Can you also tell me the capacity of the USB stick ?

BE AWARE - the following is going to completely wipe the USB stick and copy the ISO (isohybrid) image to it.

OK, run these 2 commands in sequence, being VERY careful to get the syntax right .. get it wrong and it may wipe the hard drive/SSD
Code: [Select]
cd ~/Desktop
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
enter your password when prompted, remembering nothing will be echoed to screen whilst you enter it, then hit enter.

Probably best to copy/paste those commands (particularly the second one)

Wait until you're returned to a $ prompt .. then try rebooting to the USB stick.

If it boots, select "Try Peppermint" .. then once at the Peppermint desktop, and if you're happy, double-click the "Install Peppermint" icon on the desktop.

If you're not happy doing this at the Linux command line, and you have a Windows PC, there is a GUI method for copying the ISO (isohybrid) image across under Windows (using Win32DiskImager) .. just let me know you have access to a Windows PC ;)

No, you run those commands as a regular user (only the second command needs elevated privileges, hence the "sudo")

See my last posting .. would you prefer to do this on a Windows PC via a nice GUI application ?
