external monitor flickering?
« on: November 15, 2014, 12:11:57 am »
so my external monitor has been flickering for a while nothing to distracting but i would still rather it not do that.
i found a few things on line one could be a 'dirty' power supply aka power strip is old and supplying weak power
i plugged the monitor into the wall and still does it. Mind you this only happens when my external monitor is plugged in
(and i prefer to use it all the time  with my laptop i hardly ever take my laptop off my diy desktop set up). another thing
i read is it would be a 'ground loop' something like both plugs are grounded and its causing the flicker (not sure why)
question is there anything i can do aka a different kind of power supply i would buy or something that may stop this problem?

it only flickers with the external monitor this monitor never used to flicker with my mac mini
so i dont believe its a monitor issue. It seems to be a grounding issue (but again dont know much about that).
the refresh rate is 60 so i dont think it has to do with that either. it looks like lines kind of t hat slowly move up
and down the screen their very subtle but i would still rather not have it.

Is it a CRT monitor?

CRT = Cathode Ray Tube

If it's flat, it aint CRT ;)

I asked because CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors flicker like crazy @ 60Hz, but that's probably native on yours, so 60Hz should be fine.

If it was me, I'd just start doing some A-B comparisons.  Try it on some other computers -- digital mode and analog -- and so forth and so on.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but it could be any number of things.  Bad cabling, backlight is going out, corrosion on the pins and headers.

If it only does it on one machine, I'd check the VGA connector for cold solder joints.

Not nitpicking.  Just saying...

I still use a ViewSonic A90f, on occasion, for critical graphical work (when color/hue makes a difference).

It was marketed as a "PerfectFlat" CRT monitor, e.g. flat screen CRT, and it *looks* flat, but we all know this is 'technically' impossible.   ;)

thanks! is this 'ground loop' issue something that you know of from doing my research on line i feel like this could be the issue.
The vga cabel its self is brand new so i know its not the cable the one before this was old and my screen turned blue often
after a new cable thats gone but now the screen flickers once and a while. If its something like just the monitor is on
its way out i have no issue getting a brand new monitor if thats the case i just wish i could find out of the monitor is dying.
there also is a dead pixel on the top over the screen above my clock which is rather annoying but from what  i read dead pixels
seem to be an issue with this monitor.

No prob.  I just *thought* maybe he was still using an old CRT monitor, and 60Hz sux on them.  I pump it up to whatever the GPU will handle -- 120Hz or above, when possible.

the flicker is not very much its very subtle in fact it does remind me of how the old school monitors you speak of looked
how it kind of had lines that go up and down from dark to light its very hard to explain but its not that distracting
its more im worried if its caused by a deeper problem that will result in something worse just trying to trouble shoot
what the cause could be.
