The only menu I've found that works with lxpanel (in Peppermint 5 /Lubuntu 14.04) is Cardapio.
(see screenshot at the bottom of this posting)

OK, first let's backup your panel settings just in case you change your mind later and want to go back to the default menu .. open a terminal and run these 2 commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panelsthen
Code: [Select]
tar cvf panel.tar.gz panelOK that's all backed up .. now to download/install cardapio...

Download cardapio from here:
https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/ubuntu/webupd8/+files/cardapio_0.9.202-0recipe887%2B1%7Ecustom%7Ewebupd8%7Etrusty2_all.deb
and double-click to install.

Once installed, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/cardapio.desktopfind the line that reads

Icon=start-here

and change it to

Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/peppermint-control-center.png

SAVE the file and exit gedit

Now to add it to the panel .. Right-click a blank part of the bottom panel, and select "Add/Remove Panel Items"

Click the "+ Add" button

Highlight the "Application Launch Bar" item and click the "+ Add" button

Highlight the bottom "Application Launch Bar" item, and click the "Up" button until it's at the very top of the list.

With it still highlighted, click the "Edit"button.

In the right column, highlight "Accessories > Cardapio", and click the "+ Add" button, then the "Close" button

You should now have a small Peppermint logo on the far left of the panel .. click this to test it opens the Cardapio menu.

There are some configuration options available if you run:
Code: [Select]
cardapio optionsin a terminal

If it all works correctly and you're happy with it .. feel free to remove the "Menu" item from "Add/Remove Panel Applets.

I would like to take a look at the Cardapio menu but do think it is a good idea to back up the present menu before making changes. Unfortunately, there is nothing in any of the ~/├║ser'/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint directories to back up. I have looked within this directory for all three users set up on the machine thus far. So evidently these directories only store the 'user' modifications to whatever the default settings are. If that is the case, and Cardapio only makes changes to the menu for the user that is installing it, then I would be safe to install it and if I wanted to revert to the default then I would only need to delete everything in these directories.
Is that the way it actually works?

if you've  made no changes to the panel, there's a system wide (default) copy of the panel config file at:
/usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel
that can act as a backup :)

DO NOT edit that system wide copy .. if forever reason you choose to edit the panel config file .. first copy it to
~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel
(for each user) with
Code: [Select]
cp -v /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panelthen edit that copy.

the only thing i didn't like about this menu is it doesn't seem to have a logout button that was my reason for not keeping it when i tried it out.

The only menu I've found that works with lxpanel (in Peppermint 5 /Lubuntu 14.04) is Cardapio.

So even though in software manager an item called "xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin" appears, that menu will not work if installed?

I liked the whisker menu in mint 17 xfce, because of the search feature it includes. But it looks like this cardapio menu also includes that functionality?

Regarding the comment above about the lack of a logout button. I do not click on "menu" to logout, instead I use the log out button on the panel (which I had moved to the left side of the panel, so it now sits just to the right of "menu"), I assume that remains available?

whiskermenu only works (as a plugin) with the xfce4-panel

I suppose you could try using that instead of lxpanel, but I'm not a fan of the Xfce panel myself

I see, thanks for the info. I'll give this Cardapio menu a try, then.

Cardapio is provided with Session button. but it does not function now in LXDE.

Therefore I introduce a method to add shutdown to menu as an alternative plan.

Please install package "alacarte":

"Edit Menus" of the right quick menu functions in this.

Please add a "New item" (example: System Tools),
- Name: Shutdown
- Command: peppermint-logout
- Icon:  /usr/share/icons/Faenza/actions/48/gnome-logout.png (example)

Please click the right button of Shutdown which you added and choose "Add to Side Pane".

work completion in this.

Why the concern with having a shutdown button in the menu? Just curious.

Why not just use the shutdown button that is on the panel, in the bottom right corner of those screen shots?

I know I am off subject but I must say this...
I Love that Menu..  That should be installed in peppermint 5 by default...
Maybe in the respin they will switch to it...
Much nicer then the windows 98 looking one we have now...   8)

Yes. It is a good viewpoint.  ;)
The user who shifted from Windows does not notice that there is Shutdown button in the bottom right.  :o

A lot of people (myself included) remove the shutdown icon from panel .. it's kinda superfluous if you use the one in the menu.

Just personal preference .. kinda the whole point of this topic ;)

@BALLOON

Thanks for the additional info :)

Back when I did discover that, the next thing was to figure out how to move it to the left side, just my preference.

Is cardapio still under development?? When i go the Launchpad site, the last packages were meant for Ubuntu Quantal: https://launchpad.net/~cardapio-team/+archive/ubuntu/cardapio-ppa

And they are/were looking for new developers: https://launchpad.net/cardapio/+announcement/11268

So... looking at all this, is it wise to add something to Peppermint OS 5 (Ubuntu 14.04) which isn't really meant for this release??
