Hello iamesperambient,

The Application Launch Bar works well.  The tricks that worked for me in Panel Settings/Appearance were to make the background color black #000000 without opacity (moving the slider all the way to the right), and make the font custom color white (#FFFFFF) and the font size 20.

And in Panel settings/Geometry: Width 100%, Height 22 pixels, and Icon size 28 pixels.  I did this for two computers -- one with a 17 inch screen, and the other 15.6 inches.  You have to make these things big enough so you don't lose seeing your volume icon, etc, but I'm sure other configurations would work well too.  I just don't know what they are.

Certainly.  If you try it, I hope it all works out for you.  To be honest, I a bit stunned at how well the Application Launch Bar works.   ;)

Agree docky is better than cairo.

Hi iamesperambient and artman,

iamesperambient, I'm glad you think it will work out for you for your future black and red desktop.  The icons on the Application Launch Bar should look nice and work well.

And artman, I'd say for system resources. going from light to heavy it would go like this:  Application Launch Bar, Plank, Docky, and then Cairo Dock.  As for ease of use, Docky is easier to use than Cairo Dock.  There are fewer things to set up.

i found docky goes away when i close my laptop or log in and out of a session i didn't find it very reliable.
I found cario dock to be much more reliable and has the look i want. I actually unchecked all the effects
and bells and whistles from cario dock, so that is is just a dock like docky but one that works very solid.
I find if you don't use all the effects and crazy features on cairo dock it won't suck up to many resources
(so far in 3 months about now) i have had no issues with that and cario dock. I found docky unstable
and i found plank to be to plain in fact if my choice was only plank i would just use the app launch bar.

That being said on my next set up once i get a new comp i will i have one panel on the top with time/volume/wifi
than my panel on the bottom (transparent) will my apps im hoping to get a black/gey/red theme going and make the panel
tranasparent so the just the icons are there.

You should end up with an interesting look.  It's amazing how much we can personalize these Linux distributions.  8)

Hello iamesperambient,

According to our Synaptic Package Manager, we already have faenza style icons.  If you can have them in the color red, I do not know.

I bet there's a way to do what you want, and if anyone here would know how, I bet that person would be VinDSL.  I don't know if he's made this claim or not, but the man is an artist.  I have a hunch he'd be able to point you in the direction you want to go with the faenza style icons using the color red.  ;)

thansk for now im using a different icon theme which is 'ok' for now. and yes i had the faenza cuppertino (the blue ones) but now im doing a black/red theme.
also how do i make the application launch bar on a bottom panel be in the center ? so far i can only get it on the left side and i'd prefer to have it in the center.
and i suppose there is no way to change how the icons look with out changing the total icon theme for the system? this is one of the other reasons why i like cario dock.

It makes sense what you are saying:   You end up being able to do more with Cairo dock.  You'll pay more -- with system resources -- but you'll get more.  Cairo Dock does give you the most options of all the docks I'm aware of, and the Application Launch Bar, although not technically a dock, gives you the least.

You may have a computer in which system resources is not a problem.  If that's the case, I'd say go with Cairo.  You'll be able to do more with it, and you'll end up with a great looking desktop.

We're talking about art here.  It's okay to splurge a little!  ;)

agreed so far i haven't noticed cario dock taking up to much resources but i also dont use any of the special features i just wanted a stand alone dock i nthe middle which
doesnt crash in which i can set any icons i want and cairo dock does just that. I do like how a bottom panel looks too though. i just wish i could get the icons i nthe middle.

I believe you can put the Application Launch Bar in the middle of the panel by just adding more and more spacers.  I don't know how many spacers you can add though, because I never tried doing what you are trying to do.
