How to get Apple-like panel?
« on: October 04, 2014, 02:27:57 am »
Hi all,

I saw this apple-like panel: http://itcafe.hu/cikk/regi_gepre_uj_rendszert_linux/lubuntu_peppermint.html
Of course there Luna / elementary OS - but I like Peppermint...

how do you install  a panel like that it? And also how do you reverse it ifyou do not like it?

What are the pros and cons of such panel?

I tried Cairo dock, but ended up removing it.

They look nice, but I ended not liking it.

i use cairo dock currently and really like it. i tried docky and one other and had issues with both of them.
cario dock doesn't seem to take up much ram and not to mention its very much able to customize.
I have my set up to look similar to osx style dock. I would recommend giving it a try.

Cairo Dock may not use much RAM but on all systems I've tried it on it's loaded the CPU significantly.

That said, emegra says it doesn't on his systems .. so maybe it's only on certain hardware  :-\

Hi there, I like your desktop. What theme are you using with cairo dock? Last time I tried it I could not decide on a theme to go with.

here is my customized peppermint 5 desktop with cario dock.

About the OSX look: does anyone know which theme or settings I need to change to make the _ + X buttons look like they do on MacOS? (on the left, with the correct colours and stuff too).

I am on a mission to see how close I can get my Peppermint to look like Mac.

So why not go for the elementary os distro? I do not like it but it has what you are after...

I don't normally do this kinda stuff, but you could try this theme:
http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/mintymac-osx-theme-complete?content=166789

Then run:
Code: [Select]
xfwm4-settingsand drag the _+X buttons to the left and order them as X_+

That's the last I post about theme customisation .. I only posted this because it informs people how to re-order the window manager buttons (as this isn't part of the Peppermint Control Center

Because I really enjoy using Peppermint, have used it for years and I don't want to change. I will eventually become tired of the Mac theme and move on. It's not worth changing the distro I use over ;)

So why not go for the elementary os distro? I do not like it but it has what you are after...

OK, I am posting a tutorial to my blog and to the Tutorials section here on the forum. It's 99% done, I just have to add a few screenshots.
