Running Win8.1 using Virtualbox under peppermint5[Solved]
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:28:52 pm »
Hi,
I Wonder if anyone has experience of running Windows 8.1 under Peppermint 5 using virtualbox.
I have had problems installing peppermint as dual boot.
Of course I could use peppermint under windows but would like it the other way around.
Any experiences?

I mainly have to use MS office under Windows.

/Henrik

So you've got a win8.1 installation disk ?

OK, now you've switched your BIOS to Legacy boot mode and disabled "secure boot", just reinstall Win8 .. this time it should install with the BIOS mode bootloader instead of the UEFI bootloader.. then you should be able to install Peppermint alongside, and boot either

Thanks. I did all that today.
But... The peppermint installer did not recognize the windows install at all. I have tried a few fix presented on the net but that did not work at all. I guess I have to test virtualbox or simply stick with peppermint or windows :-(
I just saw another person having the same with peppermint not recognizing win7 or 8. You suggested MSDOS partition. If you would please advice I would be very obliged.

Best

Can you boot to Peppermint LiveCD/LiveUSB and post the output from:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l

Hi,

Seems that my different tries messed up the system. I decided to install P5 as first system, and will have a go at installing win7 in VirtualBox. I will do this during this weekend and post my experience here.

I really wouldn't go for windows in Vbox .. particularly if you plan on using it for games.

but your call...

You're only going to run into the same GPT issue as  before

Or you *could* try sending the output I asked for, and I'll try to assist you.....

Hmm .. doesn't appear as though you do have a GPT partition table

OK, try this....

Boot to the LiveCD/LiveUSB

Fire up Gparted (menu > System Tools > GParted)

Make sure /dev/sda is selected in the drop menu (top right on the GParted toolbar)

Right-click on /dev/sda2 and select "Resize/Move"

Set:
Free space following (MiB): 40000
(this will shrink the windows partition leaving 40GB of unpartitioned space after the Windows partition for Peppermint .. adjust as required).

Click the "Resize" button.

Now click the "Apply" button on the GParted toolbar.

once all the changes have been applied, paot the output from:
sudo fdisk -l
again.

and check you can still boot into windows .. in fact boot into windows and run a disk check.

Cheers. Thanks. Well. I kind of tried differnt problems solving strategies (I am a bit of restless). As you say I tried to install P5 more or less directly after I posted the above... the P5 installer recognised Windows 7 at this time.Annoying. I did install P5. Great. But then when logging into win7 it went balck. totally black. Tried a few times. But Win7 went black. P5 worked fine. Then I installed the video-driver in win7 and installed P5 again.  Also I manually did partitione the swapfile and root partition. Now after one hour it works. I am really happy.

PCNetSpec - I am sooo impressed of your dedication! All the best. I am stubborn so I just kind of try things myself. But without the backlogg of your competence I might not dared to do all my tests.
Thanks.
