[SOLVED] WPS Office for Linux [SOLVED]
« on: September 21, 2014, 12:03:09 pm »
Hi Guys,

As well all know, there exists several office suites for productivity. Many office platforms for Linux have problems opening correctly Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents due to font availability or worst, dll files of Microsoft Office. I've tried and installed Microsoft Office 2010, LIbreOffice and other apps to play with. The other day I was messing around with WPS Office Suite in my Android phone and decided to look up if such platform exists for Linux. Well, guess what? For those of you who didn't know, it exists and it is a lot "lighter" and faster on Peppermint5 than Microsoft Office and LIbreOffice. Interface GUI looks simple, cleaner and "up to date". I'm uninstalling the heavy LibreOffice and Microsoft Office which relies on Wine and Playonlinux.

WPS Office, is an office productivity suite.
WPS Office including Writer, Presentation and Spreadsheets, is a powerful office suite, which is able to process word file, produce wonderful slides, and analyze data as well. It is deeply compatible with all of the latest Microsoft Office file formats. It can easily open and read the documents created with Microsoft Office. This is the Linux version, and it's now a TESTING package. Welcome to our website: http://wps-community.org

Download the latest package; its a .deb file so it easy to install.

Being a KingSoft product, its perfect for your Android needs!

Yep!  That's all I use.

Most of my colleagues use winders machines -- 1 uses a Mac -- nobody uses Linux but me, so...

Sharing our project files, documents, speadsheets, presentations, et cetera, became a nightmare.

Kingsoft Office A.K.A. KSO A.K.A. KSOffice A.K.A. WPS Office is the only thing that works for me, in the 'real' world.   ;)

Definitely...  :) :)

There should be a post saying "Apps to Recommend" and have users list their favorite programs with links to download and review. Perhaps a "like/dislike" button to accompany it.

One thing we should mention is...

If you're in America or the EU, make sure to download the app & patches from the appropriate 'local' mirror(s).

Otherwise, the packets will  be travelling via a slow_boat_from_China, so to speak.   8)

Yeah, I was using Kingsoft Office in PM4.  It is excellent.  There were some issues with fonts though.  Looking at the debs, I guess this is no longer an issue.  Basically it is a clone of MS Office.  You can for the most part, forget about the MS documents comparability issues.  I think MakulaLinux  uses it as their default office suite.  I might install it again if Google Drive no longer meets my requirements.  It is good to let people know that there really is a viable "free" alternative to MS Office Suite, even if it is still propitiatory software.

Interesting development!

I didn't realize KSO had a major update, last month.

Thinking it was business_as_usual, I patched KSO... only to get a broken pipe error.

Hrm...

Guess I should have RTFM first   :D

NOTES:
  • Now we renamed Kingsoft Office to WPS Office globally (WPS Office only use in China mainland previous).
  • You must uninstall the old version to works with this new package.
  • From now on, we split the package to main package (wps-office), language package (wps-office-mui) and font package (wps-office-fonts, most of the time you don't need this package unless you deal with CJK documents frequently). The main package include English resource only, you can download other supports mui package.

@ robertsala: Thx for bringing this topic up for discussion!   ;)

Yeah WPS office is good and apparently offers better compatibility with MS Office formats than Libre Office so much so that I've heard it said the their developers have been accused of getting their hands on MS Office code, but personally I wouldn't use it, people should bear in mind that although it's free to use it is proprietary, so for those who believe in the principles of free software Libre Office would be the right choice

Hi,
I also like WPS. For all non-english speakers there are several dictionaries at:
http://wps-community.org/download/dicts/

The extracted files should be put in:
/opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6/dicts

You need to do that as root with the command  :
sudo cp -avr [where you extracted the files] /opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6/dicts

It's on alpha beta stage. At times it us freezing up.

Solved:
1. Bad hard drive
2. Beta version still needed a patch...
