USB pendrive(s) previously OK suddenly not showing. (SOLVED)
« on: August 18, 2020, 01:33:48 am »
Hi, folks

Yesterday a couple of my USB pendrives stopped showing on P10 although they were working a few hours earlier.  I have re-formatted them both using the USB formatter and image writer in System which I've done many times before.

I can't see they have both failed within minutes of one another but am baffled at the moment.  Any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Just tried the following.

This is the USB drive I'm "missing" with pendrive attached when the pendrive is removed it isn't listed as above.
It seems to know it's there but not when I look in files.

Try mounting them on different hardware, anything can be happening like a motherboard going out or a usb port going bad. I had a front panel usb port quit on me and it drove me nuts.
What was I thinking?

Hi, alynur,

I tried them in different ports with no success and also on a laptop with  the same outcome.  It looks as if they have failed even though they were working fine hours
earlier.

It's probably irrelevant but they do appear on the usb-device output and when put in to a usb port the built-in lights flash as usual.  Because I formatted both at the time and attempted to save a file on to them and then they failed to show I wonder if that has any relevance?  Maybe I should just accept they have failed and buy two more?

Thanks for your reply I do appreciate your time.

sounds like a bad format, open up gparted & delete the usbs partitions, create a new partition table on it then format it. had to do that once or twice after etcher messed things up on windows
For wallpapers ive made you can download them here

Hi, rayzer,

The problem is the PC can't see them so when you look in gparted only the hdd is listed, as I said in my first post they aren't recognised.

Unless I'm doing something wrong.

Cheers, Fitzroy.

I had a problem like this, a few years ago.

Turned out that the pendrive came with some sort of factory-installed password protection scheme.

It was supposed to keep perps from seeing what was on your pendrive, unless they had the password.

It took me hours to figure out how to defeat the encryption, and wipe/format it.

It's been so long ago, I can't remember what I did to get rid of the password protection, but I know I'll NEVER buy another pendrive/USB stick with password protection again, regardless of how inexpensive it is.

Not necessarily saying that's what your problem is, but it does sound familiar...  ;)

It's a little strange because they were working fine until I formatted them after which they disappeared from view!!

They appear in the output from usb-device so the PC/P10 "knows" they are plugged in yet no sign of them when you look in the files although whether that's relevant I don't know.

They could well have both failed maybe to do with formatting although the format was apparently successful.

Whether there is some form of password protection I don't know although I've had them some years without any issue.

Maybe they have simply both packed up at the same time.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions and replies and if anyone has another idea be happy to try it out!!

Thanks to all.

Hi,, folks,

Don't know if this is any relevance but when I tried the USB drives in Ubuntu they were shown but it said cannot mount drive.

So I ran the following which shows the drives and I wonder if they can be mounted manually?

Any further thoughts would be most welcome.

Hi, folks

Well my pendrives have now re-appeared although I cannot be sure what caused this remarkable event but nevertheless a result is a result.

Many thanks to all who offered advice as whatever the reason for their recovery useful advice is never wasted and adds to my limited knowledge.

So thanks everyone.   :)

guessing it was either a mount or formatting issue given that both sticks failed together, good to see its working anyway. saved yourself some coin on buying new sticks

Thanks for offering advice.  That's the nice thing about Peppermint not only is it a very user friendly system but so is the help given on this forum.  :)
