Can't install on HP Laptop
« on: August 17, 2020, 10:11:45 pm »
I'm trying to install Peppermint on an HP 15-dw2063st and as soon as I choose something from the menu, the screen goes blank. I have tried these installers:

Peppermint 9, 32 bit
Peppermint 9, 64 bit
Peppermint 10, 32 bit
Peppermint 10, 64 bit

I even tried Xubuntu 18.04 64 bit, all with the same problem. I also tried nomodeset at boot time but no joy. This is the first computer I have seen that I can't install Linux on. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chuck

UPDATE:

edit: you could try installing on another PC to a USB partition and then copying that partition to the HP and installing GRUB. That's about all I can think of at the moment.

I thought of that too, but if the video drivers are incorrect then the display won't work then either. I'm not sure I can install grub either since I can't make the live CD work. I've tried booting from a USB connected disk that has 9 & 10 on it already but it won't boot.

Thanks for the suggestion.

So here is another question: Is it possible to install the Peppermint DE over an Ubuntu Mate installation?

Hi MrGizmo, are you able to get into your bios and check/change settings in there?
What was I thinking?

I looked at the bios and reset it. I don't think that can explain why Ubuntu Mate works. I think it must be video drivers. It seems like Peppermint can't work with the "Intel Device 8a56" video.

Ubuntu Mate 20 works correctly. Perhaps one of the maintainers could see what video drivers are used there.

Is this laptop a recent model?

Usually Intel graphic drivers are included in the kernel.
This would offer an explanation why Peppermint 10 and earlier did not work, yet Ubuntu mate 20.04 with kernel 5.4 was OK.

However, you mentioned that Ubuntu Mate 16.04 also booted OK - a bit of a mystery being 4 years old.

Anyway, according to this info, you need the 5.3 kernel or newer.
