Instead of new edition yearly, why does not have 5 years LST?I use Peppermint eight, and I'm satisfied...or enable upgrade such as Ubuntu or Mint   :)

Upgrading is something we are looking at.  Just not sure which version it will be implemented from.

No need to apologise :)

We are all here because Peppermint simply Rocks  :D

Stick with LTS or re-install each year - the choice is yours.

I'm not even sure we **should** be looking at this .. we already only base on LTS's (so every version is good for 5 years, or whenever the user CHOOSES to reinstall a new version), do-dist-upgrades have a horrible habit of borking peoples system when they haven't bothered to backup and just "trusted" something that because of the sheer amount of variables is inherently risky at the best of times.

If they're forced to do a full install, they're MUCH more likely to backup their important stuff first.

Personally I've never trusted do-dist-upgrades on PC's with a GUI .. they're stable "enough" on the GUI-less server editions .. but evn there they go wrong occasionally.

Think about this .. would you trust a "do-dist-upgrade" on say a system with full disk encryption .. where if it goes wtrong, they're likely to have lost everything. ;)

And just as importantly, would you be willing to offer support in these circumstances ?

I'd rather people moan that we don't have an easy upgrade path, than moan that we lost all their stuff ;)

Rolling release is something else I have no interest in, for pretty much the same reason .. eventually they'll tie themselves in knots (usually by or before the one to two year mark anyway .. but near certainly before an LTS runs out) and you'll risk having lost everything again (unexpectedly).

I'm a firm believer that OS's **need** a fresh 'from scratch' reinstall every now and again .. specially where there's a GUI, and users that have made loads of changes, undone half of them, then added other changes on top, ad infinitum.
(a server that rarely gets modified beyond updates, and doesn't have X11 and GUI apps to worry about is a different matter .. but then a server admin is liable to backup before making ANY changes anyway)

Since I've installed a data partition, upgrades are a breeze, fresh install, load up the software and a few minutes to make symlinks and I'm done. Makes it real easy to check out different distros on different partitions too, I link them all up to my data partition.

I'm beginning to think it may be better to talk more about having a:-

/STORAGE

partition than a:-

/DATA

partition .. calling it /STORAGE seems more accurate to me, and less likely to cause confusion about its purpose.

Just a thought :)

Good point, it's not necessary to call it /DATA.  It can be called anything you want  ;).
